To raise awareness, the activist organization Invisible Children hosted a global rally with participants “abducting” themselves and leaving family photos behind, symbolizing the kidnapping of Kony’s child soldiers.

An environmental advocacy campaign in April of 2007 called “Step It Up” generated rallies of support in all 50 American states.  These creative actions – from skiers descending a melting glacier to divers making an underwater statement – helped convince many political leaders, including then Senator Barack Obama, to adopt a common call to action: cutting carbon 80% by 2050.

Since then, an international team of authors, scientists and activists including Bill McGibben and a growing crew of youth organizers – many of whom helped coordinate “Step It Up” in 2007 – have formed 350.org to bring greater awareness and influence to the U.N. Climate Talks taking place this December in Copenhagen.
